Grade 11, Periods 2-4

Balboa AOIT's eleventh-grade academy class used the digital storytelling process to synthesize their studies of rhetoric, slave narrative, the history of abolition, and computer technology. During a classroom workshop, students collaborated in small groups and analyzed primary sources including Harriet Jacobs, Harriet Tubman, Phillis Wheatley, Olaudah Equiano, and Frederick Douglass to shape and develop their own rhetorical strategies of ethos, pathos, and logos in arguing for the abolition of slavery.

This project incorporated eleventh-grade history standards addressing the constitutional debates surrounding slavery, as well as eleventh-grade English language arts standards involving rhetoric, philosophical critique, the writing process, and public speaking skills. Students also learned the importance of time management, effective peer communication, and teamwork as they crafted their short films.

By providing an effective culminating activity for one of the initial topics addressed in this first-year academy program, the workshop helped teachers to organize and engage their new students. Not only did the core teachers receive project level support with a strong interdisciplinary activity, but the workshop's IT requirements — asset gathering, file management, and video editing work — provided a direct connection to relevant pathway skills in working with digital media.
