Teachers: Ms. Kania, Mr. Oster, Mr. Hoskisson
Grade 11
For this final project, students chose a sub-group in American society and focused on a guiding question: What influence has this group of people had on American culture? Students considered a range of people and populations, including women of particular ethnic groups, gays, Muslim Americans, the disabled population, the working poor, Jewish Americans, Mormons, the KKK, white supremacists, hippies, Beat poets, Chicanos, zoot suiters, neo-conservatives, American socialists, American communists, greasers, war veterans, and others.
As students researched their chosen topic, they were mindful that the assignment called for their work to include three Internet sources, one library book source, one encyclopedia-based source, and one primary source (song, speech, poem, political cartoon, or artwork), all of which were documented in a works cited page within the final research paper. Additionally, students created a summarizing PowerPoint presentation and shared it with the class.
This research and synthesis served as the scaffold for a culminating activity: a short digital storytelling project. This project integrated personal interview reflections with a formal voiceover track based on writing from the research paper. While the formative writing assignments were completed by each participating student, the digital storytelling activities were organized as group projects. Combining traditional core curriculum with technology skill development, the resulting projects present complex and highly personal pictures of identity, invisibility, and the American experience.
