Intercession Exploratory Recruitment Project
R.M. Marrs Magnet Center
Omaha Public School District
Omaha, Nebraska

Teachers: Ms. Burk, Ms. Larson, Ms. Ruis, Mr. Trofholz
Grade 7 - 8

Marrs Magnet Center combined their 7th and 8th grade Academy of Finance and Academy of Information Technology classes to create a communications and outreach piece for the school using the digital storytelling process using the Apple iMovie program. Students worked on this project during a week-long exploratory intersession at Marrs.

Students broke into teams and brainstormed topics that would be appropriate for a comprehensive recruitment project about Marrs. They wrote, revised and recorded individual voiceovers and used digital cameras and/or video cameras to capture supporting imagery for their projects. The technology requirements for this project — the ability to develop and produce a finished digital presentation — allowed the teaching team to incorporate the school's Extra Value Standards for Technology in a successful project-based activity.

The students involved with this project had to learn important skills such as collaboration, effective written and oral communication and the synthesis of ideas as well as approaches for effective critiquing of their own work and the work of others.

This project got its start in a professional development workshop completed by the teaching team themselves in which the lead instructors created their own outreach film for Marrs using digital storytelling tools. This exploratory project allowed them to extend the experience to their students and further develop their own instructional practices in the classroom.
