Phillip and Sala Burton Academic High School
San Francisco Unified School District
San Francisco, California

  Teacher: Mr. Flannery
Grade 12

Twelfth-grade students in Patrick Flannery’s math class at Phillip and Sala Burton Academic High School took part in a project-based video workshop, which was offered by the Pearson Foundation in collaboration with San Francisco Unified School District’s School-to-Career Department and the National Academy Foundation’s Academy of Finance program. This “Capturing a Career” workshop allows participants to present information on their skills, academic and personal experiences, and career ambitions in a short digital film they create themselves.

Based on individually taped personal interviews, each student prepares a list of question prompts, gathers a collection of supporting digital images, and assembles a three-minute film to tell his or her own story of personal growth, skill development, and career engagement in the context of individual goals and experiences at school and in the workplace.

In addition to providing an immersive, hands-on experience with video editing tools, the workshop emphasizes written and oral presentation and critical thinking and reflection skills. Participating students receive a set of 10 personalized digital business cards that they can present to potential employers or include as part of an application for additional education, fellowship, or training opportunities.
